We took a week off after Memorial day so I could plan for our next curriculum, and give the kids a mini break before we started something completely new for the summer. For those of you following along on Instagram...

This week we read The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter again, but this time we enjoyed using the beautiful unit study guide called A Year of Tales. During our spring/summer months of school, we still like to...

Like so many other Charlotte Mason fans, I knew that narration would be the heart of our education. After all, it seemed easy enough. Broken down, it’s essentially telling back in your own words what you’ve read, heard, or seen...

  • Here’s an example of a pumpkin anatomy study I set up a few years ago. I set out the pumpkin parts and had the kids label them before journaling.
This year, we’ll just casually discuss the anatomy and the role each one plays as we carve our pumpkins. 🎃

  • Morning basket and bed head fit perfectly together, don’t you think? 💤📚
.
.
After a year of practicing picture study, we’re ready to step it up.
In this photo, they studied the picture before I hid it from them, then they narrated every detail they could remember as usual. But THEN, I set the painting back out and they tried to copy it. I know many of you already do this, but it’s new for us and will definitely be something I’ll attempt alongside them.

  • Another mushroom study has been entered in his journal! I’m still not comfortable foraging for mushrooms, and am holding on to the saying “better safe than sorry”.⁣
⁣
When we take a deep dive into things like this, we mostly read several different books, watch an educational video or two, get out there in nature to find what we’re studying (bring it home if possible), then journal about what we’ve learned. The spore print came from a store bought portobello and was really neat to make. ⁣
⁣
Also, this diy felt mushroom puzzle was a hit again this year! 🍄 ⁣

  • Another change! We switched our fancier poetry teatimes/baking day to the weekend. Now my husband can join us and it’s been really sweet for the kids to be able to share their favorite weekly tradition with him.
Why didn’t we think of this three years ago?!☕️📚

  • I’ve finally completed September’s wheel and wanted to share it here. It was a beautiful, beautiful month for us here in Texas.

I have a tutorial saved to my IGTV if you want make your own wheel. It’s not as hard as it looks, I promise!☺️

  • “But there's a full moon risin'⁣
Let's go dancin' in the light⁣
We know where the music's playin'⁣
Let's go out and feel the night.⁣
⁣
Because I'm still in love with you⁣
I want to see you dance again⁣
Because I'm still in love with you⁣
On this harvest moon.” 🌕 ⁣
.⁣

We’re watercolor painting Harvest Moons again this year and I realized that with the phenology wheels that we’ve been making, we really don’t need a review of the moon phases! Pretty awesome to see our nature journaling coming in handy in so many ways. ⁣

  • The little pumpkin houses are still going strong! I bought a few more for my kids to play with and even made a bendy doll to go along with them. 😍
Instead of carving into them so early in the season, we decided to keep the accessories so they can easily be moved from pumpkin to pumpkin.

  • After @fiveinarowpublishing shared their pumpkin spice energy ball recipe, I immediately made a batch for the kids. ⁣
⁣
However, I am on a pretty restrictive diet and have to change up recipes so I can also enjoy them. For afternoon tea we had a few small pieces of banana bread and some pumpkin spice energy bites. Both of mine are the grain free versions at the bottom of the picture. I’m happy to say they were just as delicious as the original versions! 🥳⁣
⁣
I wanted to share my adapted recipe for the pumpkin bites here just in case you can’t eat grains or traditional sweeteners. 🙃⁣
⁣
Here’s how I made my grain free, low sugar, low acidic pumpkin bites:⁣
⁣
Small batch/single serving:⁣
⁣
1/2 cup nut butter (I use cashew with no sugar)⁣
1 Teaspoon pumpkin pie spice ⁣
2 Tablespoons pumpkin purée ⁣
1 Tablespoon granulated Monk Fruit sweetener (1:1 conversion) or coconut sugar ⁣
2 Tablespoons coconut flour ⁣
1 Teaspoon chia seeds⁣
a very small pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt. ⁣
⁣
Mix all ingredients really well, roll into balls, place on cookie sheet in fridge until set, then enjoy! ⁣

  • Here’s a quick and easy video of how we made our wet felt acorns in my last post.
Here’s what you’ll need:
📝 wool roving (a little goes a long way)
📝 a bowl of warm soapy water and a bowl of clean water
📝 a towel
📝 gently spread out the wool and place it in the bowl of soapy water. Remove the wool from water, then fold it over onto itself to create a ball shape. Then roll between your hands to work in the soap, creating a smooth ball.
📝 keep rolling, rolling, rolling. I would have cropped the video here, but I didn’t know how. 🤣
📝if you see cracks, place a very, very small dot of soap on them and work the cracks smooth with your fingers.
📝continue to roll. You can rinse with clean water if it’s too soapy.
📝let it dry (it dries fast) then hot glue your little acorn cap to it!

  • The autumnal equinox is tomorrow, and to celebrate the new season we made these little acorns using a wet felting technique. We’ll keep a few and give the rest away as Christmas gifts this year.
I think they’ll look so pretty hanging on a tree, don’t you?!
