Morning Basket:
Family friendly
Quality Subjects + Literature
Sets a positive tone for the day

Our morning basket changes every so often to fit our growing needs. There were a few seasons where the kids had simple handicrafts available while I read, and other times we cuddled on the couch and enjoyed character study through picture books. We have a special “holiday season” basket and another for summertime.

Now that we’ve entered a new school year, I thought it would be fun to share what our current morning time looks like using A Gentle Feast with four children ages 7,5,3 & 2.

Morning Basket is something that the entire family can enjoy together while including quality subjects and literature. I want this to set a positive tone for the day, and Julie Ross did not disappoint when she created the morning time guide for A Gentle Feast. I can tell that she’s poured her heart into this curriculum and I’m beyond grateful for her hard work.

This year it feels like the best time/place for us to get started is first thing in the morning at the breakfast table. I serve my kids a very small “first” breakfast like a smoothie or dry cereal because food REALLY helps the two little ones stay in their chairs. This is just the season of life we’re in right now!

It takes us about 15-20 minutes to go through the entire basket and afterwards we all enjoy a second breakfast. If you’re wondering, we also do Luncheon and Afternoon Tea.  ?

Several subjects are looped through so we aren’t covering all of them every single day. This allows us to adhere to the Charlotte Mason philosophy of keeping lessons short and varied.

Keep reading for a detailed rhythm that I’ve carved out for each day.

Monday-Thursday

Copywork/Writing Practice* they work on this while I read and my 3 yr old gets her very own “workbook”
Bible
Poetry*
Poem Recitation
memorize and recite one new poem every 4 weeks
Composer and Artist Study looped every Monday
Hymn memorize one new hymn every 6 weeks
Foreign Language*
Geography*
Fables

If you want to get an idea of how that looks day to day, here’s our rhythm:

Monday:
Copywork/Writing Practice
Bible
Poetry
Foreign Language
Composer Study (Artist Study will be the following week)

Tuesday:
Copywork/Writing Practice
Bible
Poetry
Geography
Hymn

Wednesday:
Copywork/Writing Practice
Bible
Poetry
Foreign Language
Poem Recitation

Thursday:
Illustrate Copywork/Writing Practice
Bible
Poetry
Geography
Fables

Friday:
Catch up day

*Copywork, geography, and foreign language are not subjects that were originally scheduled into AGF morning time, but instead meant for the main lesson block (The Feast).
However, flexibility is one of the many things that I love about this curriculum and I’ve been able to move a few subjects around with ease. I also opted to read a different poem to my kids everyday instead of doing the scheduled poet study this year.

I started following #morningbasket on Instagram because I love taking a peek into what others are doing. Do you implement morning basket into your day? I would love to hear how it works for you and what you include!

Hi There, I recently found you on Instagram and came over to your blog to read more. I am fascinated by your routines. I have four kiddos (6,5,4 and 2), and am a former K teacher. I would love to slow down this season of life and spend some better quality time with my kids rather than the crazy hustle and bustle. I’m just not sure where to start? When going through your morning basket, how much do you read of each subject? Afternoon tea?! I adore this. Please tell me more!!! Thank you for creating a beautiful blog, and I look forward to delving into the pages!
